Western Utah is Desert Country

Western Utah is known for its flat barren areas, alkaline soil and sparse vegetation, except where water from the Sevier River makes alfalfa fields green and lush. Bordered on the east by various mountain ranges and on the west by the Nevada border, Western Utah is full of valleys and low desert mountain ranges typical of the Great Basin. Mining and smelting filled the region through the mid-1900s, and even today some mining operations continue on a small scale. During World War II the U.S. Government built several military installations in Western Utah, which brought many people into the area and millions of dollars into the local economy. Today much of the area is still reserved for military use. However, when it comes to the Utah High School Activities Association, Western Utah is known more for its 11 member schools stretched over four districts and three counties. In the height of the beautiful autumn weather of October 2014, I had the amazing opportunity to visit all 11 Western high schools and four districts in the span of four days.
