MIDVALE, Utah (May 10, 2023) – The Utah High School Activities has hired a pair of veteran Salt Lake Valley school and district administrators as new Assistant Directors.

Wednesday, the UHSAA announced Missy Mackay-Whiteurs and Chris Shipman as Assistant Directors. Mackay-Whiteurs is currently the Director-of-Athletics for the Salt Lake City School District, while Shipman serves as the ‘Physical Education and Athletics Specialist’ for Granite School District. The hires fill a newly created Assistant Director position within the Association office, while also filling an Assistant Director vacancy that was created by Jon Oglesby leaving the Association for a position at Southern Utah University.

“We appreciate Jon’s hard work, commitment and dedication over the past six years as Assistant Director,” said UHSAA Executive Director Rob Cuff. “We wish him and his family the very best as he transitions to his new position at Southern Utah University.  With the departure of Jon and with the growth of more sanctioned activities at the Association, we are excited to add two new Assistant Directors to our current team.”

Mackay-Whiteurs comes to the UHSAA after working in the Salt Lake City School District since 2017, overseeing the district’s athletics and Title-I compliance efforts. She previously served as a school administrator, athletic administrator, and educator within SLCSD. Mackay-Whiteurs is also a leader in the initiative to grow administrative opportunities in athletics for women in Utah. She is a graduate of Skyline High School and earned her undergraduate degree from Weber State University. She also holds a Master of Arts in Education from the University of Phoenix. 

“Missy has a wealth of knowledge and experience in working with our member schools as an athletic administrator,” said Cuff. “Her vast experience at both the high school and district level provides us with greater insight as we work closely with our member schools. She has devoted her career to helping students and athletes excel in the classroom and within their activities.”

A graduate of Cottonwood High School, Shipman has served in a variety of district and school roles within the Granite School District. He has overseen athletics in Granite since 2019, coordinating a variety of initiatives, including serving as a member of the District’s Title-IX Committee. Shipman served as a teacher, coach, and athletic administrator at Granger High School from 2013-19. He previously coached college football at Hunter High School, Southern Utah University and Western Washington University. Shipman holds an undergraduate degree from SUU, where he played Football, and a graduate degree from the University of Phoenix.

“Chris brings to the Association tremendous experience in a wide variety of sports and activities,” said Cuff. “He is a team player with the passion and ability to assist students and athletes in achieving their goals through life lessons as they align with the mission of education-based activities in our member schools.”

Mackay-Whiteurs and Shipman will begin their tenure at the UHSAA in July.
