Southern Utah is Red Rock Country
Southern Utah is known for its canyons, coves, cactus gardens, cliffs, outdoor amphitheaters, mineral pools, tennis courts, golf courses, hiking and an abundant supply of red rock. The red rock of southern Utah is some of the most scenic and inspiring landscapes in the world. The color of rock is primarily influenced by trace materials. The red, pink, brown and yellow colors are a result from the presence of oxidized iron—that is iron that has undergone a chemical reaction upon exposure to air or oxygenated water. However, when it comes to the Utah High School Activities Association, Southern Utah is known more for its 15 member schools stretched over three districts and three counties. In the height of the beautiful autumn weather of September 2015, I had the amazing opportunity to visit all 15 Southern high schools and three districts in the span of four days.
